ABOUT DOGS

"A dog wags its tail with its heart." -- Martin Buxbaum

Scientists now believe that dogs have been living with people for 100,000 years.--AP story, February 14, 2004

"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued in the next yard." --Dave Barry

Pet owners have less heart disease and lower blood pressure than non-pet owners, and on average they live a year longer.--Jon Katz, The New Work Of Dogs

The American Animal Association estimates that 53 per cent of pet owners vacationed with their pets in 2003.

When we bury our head in our hands and wish we had never been born, a dog doesn't tell us that we have brought it all upon ourselves. He doesn't hope it will be a lesson to us. Instead he comes up and nudges us with his head. He looks at us as if to say, "Well, you've always got me. We'll go through the world together and always stand by each other, won't we?" Paraphrased from Jerome K. Jerome Idle Thoughts Of An Idle Fellow

A dog's brain is good at detecting smell and movement. A dog knows what part of the house you have been in, what you ate for lunch, and whether you have a cut on your hand.

Dogs don’t see as well as humans. From a distance, you probably look like a greyish-yellow-blue blob to your dog. The common belief that dogs are color blind is false. Dogs can see colors but they are not as vivid as the colors we see. Their vision is much like ours at twilight.

In America, twenty-five percent of all dogs sleep on their owners' beds.--Jon Katz

All dogs come equipped with loyalty, love, energy, a doggie sense of humor, and the ability to smell leftover chicken a block away.

Approximately 230 dogs have lived in the White House, more than all the presidents, first ladies, and presidential children combined. --Stanley Coren The Pawprints of History

When Pompeii--an ancient Roman town buried during an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius--was first uncovered, scientists found evidence of a dog lying across a child, apparently trying to protect him.

A dog was "king" of Norway for three years during the 11th century AD. The Norwegian king, angry that his subjects had once deposed him, put the dog on the throne and demanded that it be treated like royalty.

On November 3, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2, the second man-made satellite to go into orbit around the earth. The satellite was nicknamed "Muttnik" by the American press because it carried the first animal to fly in outer space, a sweet-looking mutt named Laika.

"Only when you undertake the complicated routine of daily sharing the universe with another species will you see yourself as they see you...what seems reasonable treatment of animals today may one day appear as barbaric as slavery or public hangings. If you could look back from that hypothetical future, you might even feel ashamed of your assumption that you, because you're human, come first in the world." --Cary Tennis, Salon.com, August 26, 2003.

A few years ago, scientists discovered that dogs could detect which of a series of test tubes had cancerous cells in it. Dogs can also be trained to warn epileptics that they are going to have a seizure.

"[Dogs] are never gloomy at the thought that this walk was not as nice as yesterday's walk, this forest not nearly as interesting as last week's forest. Each walk is new, unique, and uniquely interesting, with its own set of smells and delights. I keep looking for my dogs' favorite walks, but the truth is, they have no favorite walks; only I do." --Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson

"If you can't decide between a Shepherd, a Setter or a Poodle, get them all ... adopt a mutt!" --ASPCA

"There is only one smartest dog in the world, and everybody has it." --Anonymous
